All Things Amish–Blue Gate Restaurant in Shipshewana
Blue Gate Restaurant is a special place in Shipshewana, and it’s special
for several reasons. It’s a memorable place to stop and eat–and yes, I’m talking Amish food. It also is home to a remarkable theater which this year is hosting talent ranging from Amy Grant to plays such as Beverly Lewis’ The Confession. You can see the entire schedule here.
But what makes the Blue Gate special for me is the owner–Mel, and the
other folks who work there–Amish and Englisch alike. They’re wonderful people who treat you kindly, make you feel at home, and remind you why you’ve stopped in this little town. Small wonder I’d choose to set my stories, Falling to Pieces and A Perfect Square in this town.
I was honored to do a book signing at The Blue Gate last November. I also ate there several times in the last year. It’s a place I’ve been to with old friends. And you know what? It’s a place I plan to return to–time and again. I hope you manage to find your way there if you’re travelling through northern Indiana. If you do, try the pie. It’s amazing.

Geri, I’m glad you’re enjoying the focus on Shipshewana. I’m hoping it will help people to SEE the setting of Falling to Pieces and A Perfect Square when they read the stories. : )
Oh , we loved that restaurant!!! The pie is to die for!! I tried peanut butter banana chocolate pie! It was sooooo good!! Going back this June for sure!! Good service, great food!!
Karla, chocolate is my favorite, but I also adore the cherry … and the apple! : )- I could go on. Ha ha ha.
Great place to eat. I’ve even eaten there in my PJ’s. Yes, Shipshie had an early morning sale in February and if you wore your PJ’s during the earlier hours you could get an additional percentage off your purchase. After the sale we ate at the Blue Gate(I even had pink curlers in my hair.) That was a few years ago. I don’t know if they have that sale anymore.
Jerri, THIS is PJ weekend. : ) Click on this link and you’ll see photos of shoppers in their PJs. http://www.shipshewana.com/page.php?page_id=351
We love the Blue Gate and yes the pie is amazing. We go camping in Shipshewana and always eat there when we do. Love your books
Thank you, Mardi! I want to go back up to Shipshe in our little trailer sometime, but that’s a LONG way to drive from Texas. : )-

Not only do my sister and I try to get there to eat once a year – I’d LOVE to time it to be there when you are the next time.
Let me know – I’ll drive down to meet/greet you in person!
It’s a wonderful place to eat and then roam the stores – oh yeah!
I really enjoyed – FALLING TO PIECES -
Sometimes living so close to a place like Shipse makes one begin to take it for granted. The people ARE amazingly welcoming for as many as they serve each year.
Joy, I’m so glad you enjoyed Falling to Pieces. You might want to check back to this blog on Tuesday (hint, hint). I hope to go back to Shipshe in the fall for signing … but those plans are still in the works. It would be GREAT to meet you!
One of my favorite hometown stops! Their toasted apple bread is to-die-for.
I love apple bread, Sarah. I’ll try it next time I’m in town. : )
I have been there and loved it, had so much food, definitly worth the visit
Ilene, it’s definitely a central gathering spot. Right? : )
Always a favorite place for me, too. And we’ve had the same buggy driver several times when we’ve been there in the past. The countryside drive is the perfect way to end a meal there. This year I will be twisting hubby’s arm to take me there for my birthday dinner.
I love the buggies outside the Blugate. I forgot about that until you mentioned it! : )
I have been to the Blue Gate Restaurant several times. I never really thought that the pies were very good. They need to learn how to make pie crust. I guess they were trying to cut down on expenses and not use much shortening or butter.
I must say that I disagree with Jerry’s comment about the pie crust. Mine was flaky and melted in your mouth. Maybe he just hit a bad day with a baker that wasn’t very good. I have never had such good pie!!
Karla, it was good when I was there too. Jerry, maybe try the cake next time! : )

I’ve eaten so many times at the Blue Gate Restaurant and NEVER get tired of it. My favorite pie is, Coconut Cream. It is delicious! I always take a piece of pie home to my husband, he likes Blueberry! Now I’m hungry for a piece of their pie!
