Blue Gate Restaurant in Shipshewana

All Things Amish–Blue Gate Restaurant in Shipshewana

Blue Gate Restaurant is a special place in Shipshewana, and it’s special for several reasons. It’s a memorable place to stop and eat–and yes, I’m talking Amish food. It also is home to a remarkable theater which this year is hosting talent ranging from Amy Grant to plays such as Beverly Lewis’ The Confession. You can see the entire schedule here.

But what makes the Blue Gate special for me is the owner–Mel, and the other folks who work there–Amish and Englisch alike. They’re wonderful people who treat you kindly, make you feel at home, and remind you why you’ve stopped in this little town. Small wonder I’d choose to set my stories, Falling to Pieces and A Perfect Square in this town.

I was honored to do a book signing at The Blue Gate last November. I also ate there several times in the last year. It’s a place I’ve been to with old friends.  And you know what? It’s a place I plan to return to–time and again. I hope you manage to find your way there if you’re travelling through northern Indiana. If you do, try the pie. It’s amazing.

  2. Oh , we loved that restaurant!!! The pie is to die for!! I tried peanut butter banana chocolate pie! It was sooooo good!! Going back this June for sure!! Good service, great food!!

  3. Great place to eat. I’ve even eaten there in my PJ’s. Yes, Shipshie had an early morning sale in February and if you wore your PJ’s during the earlier hours you could get an additional percentage off your purchase. After the sale we ate at the Blue Gate(I even had pink curlers in my hair.) That was a few years ago. I don’t know if they have that sale anymore.

  4. We love the Blue Gate and yes the pie is amazing. We go camping in Shipshewana and always eat there when we do. Love your books

Not only do my sister and I try to get there to eat once a year – I’d LOVE to time it to be there when you are the next time.
Let me know – I’ll drive down to meet/greet you in person!
It’s a wonderful place to eat and then roam the stores – oh yeah!
I really enjoyed – FALLING TO PIECES -
Sometimes living so close to a place like Shipse makes one begin to take it for granted. The people ARE amazingly welcoming for as many as they serve each year.

    • Joy, I’m so glad you enjoyed Falling to Pieces. You might want to check back to this blog on Tuesday (hint, hint). I hope to go back to Shipshe in the fall for signing … but those plans are still in the works. It would be GREAT to meet you!

  6. Always a favorite place for me, too. And we’ve had the same buggy driver several times when we’ve been there in the past. The countryside drive is the perfect way to end a meal there. This year I will be twisting hubby’s arm to take me there for my birthday dinner.

  7. I have been to the Blue Gate Restaurant several times. I never really thought that the pies were very good. They need to learn how to make pie crust. I guess they were trying to cut down on expenses and not use much shortening or butter.

  9. I’ve eaten so many times at the Blue Gate Restaurant and NEVER get tired of it. My favorite pie is, Coconut Cream. It is delicious! I always take a piece of pie home to my husband, he likes Blueberry! Now I’m hungry for a piece of their pie! :)
